Cleaning up some lose ends

Posted by Chris on Wed, Jan 22, 2025

Back on the horse of how to mess around with website content. I’ve been away from it for so long I forgot how this works. Ha! I need to get regular about posting some real content! There is certainly no lack of things being worked on.

Many changes have been made to this website’s templates and stylesheet. The default base layout was loading fonts from Google and Font Awesome directly from their respective sites. That’s been changed so that the fonts are loaded from this site. All the remaining javascript on this site is locally hosted. No tracking is good.

The main font for long prose has been changed from ‘Maitree’ to ‘Atkinson Hyperlegible’. I was never happy with ‘Maitree’ in that I found it surprisingly hard to read. ‘Atkinson Hyperlegible’ is a high readability font created by the Braille Institute [ https://www.brailleinstitute.org/freefont ]. It’s quite good for reading large volumes of text. I converted my internal Mediawiki site to this font a few months ago and find it is easier on the eyes and less tiring. Maybe it’s just me…

References to Instagram have been removed. That account will be deleted soon. I’m still on the fence about whether I need a Pixelfed account as an alternative. Maybe I should stick with Mastodon for image posting. Being Fediverse apps they can follow and cross-post to one another seemlessly so it’s probably not necessary.

I also spent some time trying out some markdown editors for making edits. Zed [ https://zed.dev ] is a nice editor if you want to preview markdown in a WYSIWYG manner. The flatpak is by the developer and is kept up to date. Great stuff. The Zed preview window doesn’t show Hugo front matter. Nice! A lot of markdown editors show the ’noise’ of front matter and it’s always bugged me. That said, it doesn’t show Hugo short codes properly — as expected. No big deal.

Tootles!
